LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — An escaped suspect who prompted a search Wednesday morning near Eastern Kentucky University is back in police custody.
According to the Richmond Police Department, the suspect, 18-year-old Logan Gassman, of Washington, North Carolina, was arrested just after 8:30 a.m.
According to police, Gassman was originally taken into custody just before 5 a.m. Wednesday after a pursuit. Police said officers tried to pull him over after he was clocked going 100 mph on Interstate 75. When he didn't stop, a pursuit ensued and ended when Gassman crashed and ran off. Police said the truck Gassman was driving was reported stolen, and officers found there were multiple out-of-state warrants out for his arrest.
Officers suspected Gassman was driving under the influence and took him to a local medical facility after his arrest. He was released around 6:30 a.m. and put in the back of a police cruiser in handcuffs. Police said while officers were completing "procedures with medical personnel," Gassman escaped from the back compartment, out through the front door of the police cruiser and ran toward a university soccer field.
Police searched the immediate area around the Eastern Bypass and surrounding neighborhoods, setting up a perimeter and deploying drone and K-9 teams to search the woods near the soccer field.
The search for Gassman prompted EKU to send an emergency alert advising people to stay indoors and lock their doors. In a follow-up alert, EKU said it had received no reports of the suspect being on campus and believed there was no active threat to the university community. An all-clear was then given and university officials said normal campus activities could resume.
Police said Gassman was found in a nearby transit bus just after 8:30 a.m. and taken into custody.
