Family of Shively shooting victim raising money for proper burial

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WDRB) -- The past 24 hours have been a blur for one New Albany family.

ā€œEverybody knew Dewayne cuz his smile," Roderick Davis said. "He was always smiling when you'd see him or joking around."

Roderick Davis' little brother, 21-year-old Dewayne Davis, was shot and killed Thursday night in Shively.

ā€œHe meant a lot to our family and to a lot of other people.ā€ Roderick said.

He said Dewayne was one of five siblings and a father of two young children.

Police say Dewayne was shot and killed by 23-year-old Raheem Hardin. Hardin was in court Friday morning.

ā€œGiven the nature of the allegations that I've reviewed here today, coupled with your history of domestic violence, the court does believe it is appropriate to increase the bond to $250,000ā€ the judge said.

Hardin is charged with murder, fleeing from police, tampering with evidence and criminal trespassing.

Dewayne Davis was shot in a friend's home. A police report says the woman who lives at the home had recently ended her relationship with Hardin and that the two had a child together. She told police Hardin came into her room and shot Dewayne Davis multiple times before jumping out a window.

Roderick Davis said his brother and Hardin had gotten into an argument in the past but never thought this would happen.

ā€œWe didn't think (Hardin) would do nothing like this though," Roderick Davis said. "This just caught everybody off guard."

Now the family has started a GoFundMe page.

ā€œSo people can help me out and bury my brother,ā€ Roderick Davis said.

The family hopes to give Dewayne Davis a proper burial and one final goodbye.

ā€œWe just, we really can't move," Roderick Davis said. "We just wish we could see him again."
