Father of dead teen reacts to new Herbert Lee arrest

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A man who served his sentence after he was convicted for the deaths of four teens is back in custody on brand new charges.

Once again, Herbert Lee is accused of driving a stolen car.

Lee appeared in court this morning to face the judge on the new accusations. His court appearance was brief. The county attorney asked the judge for a higher bond, pointing to his previous record that involved a 2008 incident in which he led police in a pursuit in a stolen car. That pursuit resulted in the death of four teens.

Lee's bond was set at $10,000.

WDRB News was the only news organization on the scene Thursday night as a crime task force arrested Lee near 26th St. and Muhammad Ali.

Lee and an alleged accomplice, Charles T. Young, were arrested after police ran the plate and discovered that the red 2012 Chevy Camaro they were in was stolen from Avis Rental at the Louisville International Airport.

Lee was convicted in the fatal crash that killed four teens leaving a Youth Alive event in December 2008.

He was released from jail last December.

The families of the teens who died met with Lee earlier this year, and Lee discussed his desire to improve his life.

Robin Shields, Aaron Shields' mother says, "He needs some rehabilitation. You just can't sit them in there and then think that they're going to come out here and do the right thing. You know they need help. They need guidance."

Now, the families believe this latest arrest in a stolen car is a setback.

"The only thing I probably would say is, 'what could you possibly be thinking about?'" said Frankie Shields, the father of victim Aaron Shields. "That's about the best thing I could say."

Lee is charged with receiving stolen property and driving on a suspended license. His arrest comes as Louisville Metro Police say they've seen a string of car thefts from the airport.

Robin Shields had a direct message for Lee: "I's here. I'm here for him."
