LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A former NFL player is helping develop youth in Louisville.
The 29th and 9th Foundation was founded by Bilal Powell, a former University of Louisville football star. Powell hosted the Total Wellness Camp at Norton Healthcare Sports and Learning Center in the Russell neighborhood on Saturday.
Around 100 children between the ages of 9 to 14 years old attended.
The camp combined football drills and mentoring to enhance attendees' physical abilities and mental health. There was also a panel discussion focused on wellness.
"It's very important, it's something I learned as an adult that I wished I was aware of, if I had the tools that we're teaching and some of the knowledge we're trying to teach, I think my life would have been a lot different," Powell said. "I would have been able to cope with certain things as I got older."
People attending the camps also received free t-shirts, lunch and backpacks filled with school supplies.
Powell played nine seasons with the New York Jets, rushing for 3,675 yards and 15 touchdowns. While at the University of Louisville, he ran for 1,405 yards and 11 touchdowns during his senior year.
