LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A street conversion project in Louisville’s Germantown neighborhood is causing confusion for some drivers, with several motorists making U-turns on active railroad tracks to reach Logan Street.

Drivers were seen Monday turning around on the tracks near the intersection of Goss Avenue and Logan Street, sometimes entering oncoming traffic.

The area is part of an ongoing project converting Logan and Shelby streets from one-way roads to two-way traffic patterns. The new traffic configuration prevents drivers on Goss Avenue from turning left directly onto Logan Street.

Instead, some drivers are continuing past the intersection and making U-turns on the railroad tracks to access Logan Street.

"It seems like a lot of risk over a railroad track," said neighborhood resident Kyle Etienne. "I don’t know if you really need to tell grown adults who are in a car not to do that."

Etienne said he watched multiple drivers attempt the maneuver within a short period Monday afternoon.

"That’s like the fifth car that has done it," he said.

Some larger vehicles also struggled with the new traffic pattern, including one truck driver who performed a multi-point turn on the tracks.

Andrea Harbeson, who frequently drives through the area, said the railroad crossing already creates delays when trains stop on the tracks.

"That is a train stop that is notorious for when the train will stop on the tracks and kind of hold up traffic for a while," Harbeson said.

She said drivers may be taking shortcuts because the new route feels inconvenient, but questioned whether the maneuver is safe.

"It’s just kind of out of your way to remedy it, and so people are doing the quick fix, but it is not the safest way to do it," Harbeson said.

Etienne said additional signs ahead of the intersection could help prevent confusion.

"I think there might need to be some signage further back — left only, right only," he said.

The street conversion project is expected to be completed later this summer.
