'Gnome bandit' suspect arrested at Georgia campground

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The suspected "gnome bandit" who was wanted for stealing yard gnomes, patio furniture, plants and other items off porches in the Highlands, has been arrested.

LMPD said Barton Bishop was arrested at a campground in Gordon County, Georgia. Police say he is behind more than 50 thefts. Investigators found the stolen items at his house and in a storage unit.

Bishop was booked into the Gordon County Jail in Georgia on a charge of being a "fugitive from justice." Calhoun Police Chief Tony Pyle said officers acted on a tip that Bishop was in the area. They spotted him and a woman at a Walmart Monday afternoon. Officers conducted a felony traffic stop at gunpoint, after comparing the out-of-state license plate to the tip they received.

Bishop cooperated and had no weapons in his car.  He told police he was on vacation. The woman in the car had no warrants and was allowed to leave.

Bishop was arrested solely on the warrants from Louisville. He is not charged with any offenses in the city of Calhoun, chief said.

Earlier Monday, LMPD said officers had found more items that were stolen from yards, asking people to come to the 5th Division at 2301 Douglass Boulevard reclaim their property. LMPD said he was trying to sell items online and at a local peddlers mall.
