Kentucky Lottery headquarters

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A man who won $225,000 playing the Kentucky Lottery had to remind his wife that she wasn't dreaming the next day.

A Pendleton man, who wants to remain anonymous, won the lottery's top scratch-off prize on Aug. 7. He played a 100X The Cash Scratch-off at the Pilot Travel Center in Pendleton.

While he plays the lottery frequently, he had never won the top prize.

The man purchased some $10 scratch-off tickets one night. He then scratched off a part of the ticket, and it revealed a '50X' symbol.

"I saw 50X next to $500," he said to lottery officials. "There might be something else here, I'm going to go home before I scratch the rest of this off."

When he returned home, he woke up his wife to have her scratch off the rest of the ticket. The rest of the ticket showed a '100X' symbol, which multiplied a $2,000 prize.

They were excited about the big win. He admitted to not sleeping much before driving to Kentucky Lottery headquarters in Louisville to claim his winnings.

While driving there the next day, he was called by his wife.

"She called me right after I left home this morning," he said. "She said, 'was I dreaming last night? Or did you really hit the lottery?' I said, 'No, I really did.'"

The man from Henry County left lottery headquarters with $162,000 after taxes. He plans to use the winnings to pay off bills and go on a vacation with his wife.

Pilot Travel Center will receive $2,250 for selling the winning ticket.
