LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Whether people are celebrating the new year at home or on the road, police said there are several things people should avoid doing.

People are encouraged to plan ahead of time for a designated driver, public transportation or ride sharing service.

"We're going to be out in force," said Chief Steve Healey with Pewee Valley Police Department. "If your celebration includes alcoholic beverages, please utilize a designated driver or one of the numerous ride share programs because we want everybody to have an enjoyable and safe New Year, but we want to keep people safe."

Healey said police also warn people not to fire guns in the air to celebrate the new year. It is illegal and can also cause PTSD for veterans and scare pets.

People are encouraged to drink responsibly and avoid leaving valuables in cars.
