LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) — More than 40 new and upgraded playgrounds are coming to Indiana state parks.

According to reporting from FOX59, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources joined Gov. Mike Braun and First Lady Maureen Braun in Lawrence Thursday for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at a newly opened playground at Fort Harrison State Park.

This is just one of 43 playgrounds planned to be installed at Indiana's state parks. The Lilly Endowment awarded a $50 million grant to the Indiana DNR, $11 million of which was set aside for the new playgrounds.

"Investments into our state parks are an investment into Hoosier health and Hoosier families," Mike Braun said in a news release. "Thanks to the generosity of Lilly Endowment, we are creating spaces for all families to enjoy and experience the very best of Indiana’s outdoors. Indiana state parks and natural resources are part of what makes our state such a special place to live, work and raise a family."

The playgrounds will include updated equipment and improved accessibility, FOX59 reported.

Sixteen of the 43 planned playgrounds have already been installed. Five more will be completed by early June and and ones remaining will be completed by the fall, officials said.

The already-completed playgrounds include:

  • Mounds State Park: Locust Grove
  • Summit Lake State Park: Picnic Area
  • Fort Harrison State Park: Shafter & Cherry Tree
  • Brown County State Park: Taylor Ridge, Lower Shelter and Linen Room
  • Lieber SRA: Sunny Acres
