LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — After nearly four decades, investigators identified an infant, only known as "Baby Doe," who was found dead in southern Indiana.
The Dubois County Prosecutor Beth Schroeder said Friday the identification of the baby, who was found dead at Monastery Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand, Indiana in 1987, is the result of advances in DNA technology.
The child's mother, who was a juvenile at the time, was previously charged with murder and voluntary manslaughter. Authorities noted the pregnancy was "unintended."
"While the legal process moves forward, officials have emphasized the need to approach this case with sensitivity and compassion," Schroeder said in a release.
The prosecutor said additional details will not be released at this time out of respect and ongoing investigation.
