LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Jefferson County Public Schools announced Friday it's expanding extra security measures to all high school football game.

Two schools, Fern Creek and Valley, had already announced the changes, which include:Ā

  • No masks, backpacks or large bags (diaper bags will be searched)
    • Small clear bags (no larger than 12 x 6 x 12) will be allowed
    • Small clutch purses (no larger than 6.5 x 4.5) will be allowed but are subject to search
  • ID required for all students and adultsĀ
    • Students can use driver's license, school ID or Infinite Campus profile if it has their picture
  • Everyone must pass through a security checkpoint with a metal detector
  • Middle schools students must be accompanied by an adult
  • No exit and re-entry to the stadium
  • Gates will be closed after the end of the second quarter

JCPS Police will monitor all parking lots before, during and after the events.

All schools hosting football games implemented the new rules Friday night, including Fern Creek who hosted Bullitt East.

The new rules, at times, created long lines for fans to enter, but the security measures were well received by parents, students, and fans visiting from Bullitt East.

"I definitely understand and I definitely agree with it," said Stacey Fix, a Fern Creek fan.

"Just knowing they're taking the extra precautions helps," said Cath Cundiff, a Fern Creek parent.

While the new rules are set at all JCPS football games, individual schools have the ability to add any extra measures it sees fit.

The changes come after a fatal shooting in the front parking lot of Pleasure Ridge Park High School on Sept. 29 while a football game was being played on campus. WDRB confirmed with the family that the teen that died several days after the shooting was a Valley High School student.Ā

A second student was also injured in the shooting. There have been no arrests in connection to the shooting.

Louisville Metro Police continues to encourage anyone with information about the shooting to contact the tip line at 502-574-LMPD (5673). Callers can remain anonymous.
