Family of victim in PRP High double shooting fed up with gun violence in Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A 17-year-old is fighting for his life at UofL Hospital following a double shooting at Pleasure Ridge Park High School on Sunday, according to the young man's family.

Louisville Metro Police said that two juveniles were shot outside of PRP during a rescheduled football game against Male High School. Officers said both of the juveniles were there to attend the game.

One victim was found at the scene with multiple gunshot wounds and was subsequently rushed to UofL Hospital in critical condition. The young man's family tells WDRB News that he is 17 years old, but asked to keep his name private due to his age.

Will Pitts, who organizes the annual "Shoot Balls, Not Guns" event and is an outspoken anti-gun violence advocate, is the victim's cousin.

"You don't expect this to happen to anybody, let alone your family member," he said standing outside the UofL Hospital Emergency Room.

Pitts said that the young man continues to fight for his life in the hospital. Family members are hurt, angry and fed up with violent crime in Louisville.

"He was only 17," Pitts said. "He's still a kid, and he's just beginning to live life. So, the family is very devastated and hurt at this moment."

So far in 2024, according to LMPD, more than 100 people have been killed due to gun violence and nearly 300 non-fatal shootings have also occurred in Louisville.

The victim's family says that the violence needs to stop now.

"We have to become more proactive in our approach towards gun violence and the effects it has on our community, and that's every Louisvillian," Pitts said. "We have to begin to start to love and begin to take our communities back."

While the teenage victim remains in critical condition, LMPD said that the other person shot showed up to Mary and Elizabeth Hospital Sunday night. That person is expected to recover.

Police are still investigating the shooting and searching for suspects. Investigators are asking anyone with information to come forward or call the police tip-line at 574-LMPD. You can remain anonymous.
