LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A man faces gun charges after being arrested moments after a double shooting at a high school football game in southwest Louisville Sunday night.
According to court records, Damon Jerome Williams Jr., 22, of Louisville was arrested soon after the shooting happened at Pleasure Ridge Park High School.
He was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon on school property and with possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. The arrest citation does not state whether the guns were used in the shooting, and Williams has not been charged with the shooting that sent two juveniles to the hospital.
JCPS spokeswoman Carolyn Callahan told WDRB that Williams' arrest was not connected to the shooting.
Court records show Louisville Metro Police officers hired as security for the rescheduled PRP vs. Male High School football game were told by eyewitnesses that Williams was seen throwing two guns over the fence behind the visitors bleachers.
According to the arrest citation, eyewitnesses said Williams was wearing black pants and a white hoodie. When officers found him, they read him his Miranda rights. Police said they recorded Williams' statement on body camera where he said he brought the guns to PRP High School and threw them over the fence for himself and his cousin.
Police said Williams told them, "he needed protection because they are from Victory Park neighborhood and people don't like them."
John Bradley, a spokesman for Louisville Metro Police, said officers responded on a trouble run at 7:15 p.m. JCPS security officers requested LMPD to help with crowd control.
Shots were fired in the parking lot area just past 8 p.m. and police found a boy who had been shot multiple times. He was taken to UofL Hospital with critical injuries.
A second juvenile victim then showed up to Mary and Elizabeth Hospital, but his injuries weren't believed to be life-threatening.
The game was suspended after the shooting, and players were escorted to their locker rooms. Spectators were asked to leave.
Police believe the suspects fled through the residential area near the high school. They're asking asking nearby residents to review their home surveillance systems for any possible footage.
