LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky Blood Center is asking for the public's help in restocking blood supply.
The blood center could use all types of blood, but there is a significant need for A negative blood type. There's currently a half a day supply or less to meet the need.
According to the Kentucky Blood Center, 18% of blood drives happen at high schools, so being out for summer also contributes to the shortage.
Eric Lindsey with the Kentucky Blood Center said one pint of blood saves three lives.
"We're certainly not trying to sound the alarm bells, but we are at a point where we need people to put this on the front of their minds and to look at your schedules and maybe you can't come today but make a point of it over the next few days or next week to get out," Lindsey said. "Because if we continue to see the numbers we've seen the last few weeks, we are going to be at a point where we're at some critical and dangerous levels.
KBC said the need for blood is constant. Blood collected by the center goes to more than 70 hospitals across Kentucky where it's used for surgeries, diseases like cancer, trauma, organ transplants, premature births and more.
According to a news release, blood donations historically dwindle during the summer months.
