LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky lawmakers are trading in the detailed marble and granite of the state Capitol building for simple paint on drywall.

Lawmakers have moved out of the 115-year-old Capitol building for a major renovation project.

For the time being, the Kentucky House and Senate will work out of a temporary building in the Capitol parking lot.

"It's just basic rooms because we didn't want to spend a lot of money," Senate President Robert Stivers said during a tour of the new facility Thursday, LEX18 News reported

Besides the look, the most significant difference is that the temporary structure has no galleries or spaces for the public. Stivers said they plan to accommodate public access through alternative spaces in the Capitol Annex and technology like streaming.

Stivers said there will be two rooms set up for the public to watch streams.

"You're basically seeing the building. You're seeing it. Just big enough to hold the chambers," Stivers said.

The renovation is said to take several years to complete.
