LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) --  Nelson County sheriff's deputies shot and killed an 80-year-old man Wednesday in Bardstown after he pointed a gun at officers during a traffic stop, according to Kentucky State Police.

Sheriff Ramon Pineiroa said the shooting happened at the Shell station at Bloomfield and Guthrie Drive, just east of downtown Bardstown.

Kentucky State Police Master Trooper Bryan Washer said the shooting happened around 1:30 p.m.

In a news release, KSP said an employee from the Nelson County Humane Society called 911 after "an individual became disorderly" and threatened them with a firearm.

That person was identified by KSP as Norman Perkins, of New Haven, Kentucky. Police said Perkins left the humane society and headed north on U.S. 31 East toward Bardstown. Deputies later caught up with Perkins and attempted a traffic stop, but Perkins "refused to yield," KSP said.

Perkins eventually pulled into the parking lot of the Speedy Mart on Bloomfield Road. Police said while deputies were trying to make contact with him, Perkins raised and pointed his firearm at them.

Two deputies fired their guns, hitting Perkins. He died from his injuries. No officers were injured.

KSP is investigating the shooting.
