LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Three juveniles have been arrested and charged in connection with a string of burglaries in the Louisville area.

During a news briefing Friday morning, Louisville Metro Police Sgt. Joe Keeling said the suspects were arrested by detectives in the 3rd Division Criminal Investigations Unit around 6:30 p.m. on June 25, after serving a search warrant at a residence in the area of Barfield Road. That's near Terry Road and Greenwood Road, in the Pleasure Ridge Park neighborhood.

Keeling said detectives believe the suspects "were probably responsible for about 20 or more burglaries. At this time, they've been charged with five burglaries, and we will be putting more charges on them in the near future."

According to a news release, a parent of two suspects was found at the home of a family member and cooperated with detectives. The parent escorted detectives to the residence on Barfield Road. That's where investigators recovered clothing believed to have been worn by the juveniles when they were allegedly committing burglaries.

Keeling said a handgun recovered that was reported stolen was not taken from a Jeffersonville gun store as stated in the LMPD news release about the crime.

"I misspoke on that," Keeling said. "I was actually just corrected right before this interview started. It was stolen out of a package here in Louisville that was being shipped along with several other firearms."

After collecting the evidence from the home, detectives searched for the two suspects, who were still at large.

Investigators conducted surveillance on the parent with the assistance of LMPD's Air Unit and saw him picking up two of the suspects from a relative, according to the release.

That's when "a coordinated felony traffic stop was initiated by 3rd Division Late watch officers," according to the release.

Two juveniles were then then taken into custody without incident. Investigators said they confessed to their involvement in several burglaries across the Louisville Metro area. Keeling said another suspect in the robberies was taken into custody last week. He said the most recent break-ins, that date back to April, have been scattered throughout the city.

"They even admitted that they did quite a few," Keeling said. "We're still trying to figure out which ones they're responsible for. It was just them out in stolen cars, picking random places to hit. They couldn't even remember where they were."

Keeling said "juveniles have been committing the majority of the crimes that we're dealing with. It probably does have a lot to do with it being summertime and school being out and them having a lot of free time on their hands."

One of the suspects is 15 years old, another is 16, and the third is 17. Keeling said two of the suspects are siblings and more arrests are expected. They face charges including burglary, possession of a handgun by a minor, receiving stolen property over $10,000, criminal mischief, and receiving a stolen firearm.

Parenting -- or the lack of it -- is at the root of many of the recent crimes committed by juveniles, according to Keeling.

"I think a lot of it has to do with some parenting," Keeling said. "A lot of people aren't parenting their kids. They're relying on LMPD to parent them."
