LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Lawmakers from both sides of the Ohio River are pushing to improve the quality of life in river towns.

The Ohio River Restoration Program Act was introduced by Kentucky Rep. Morgan McGarvey (D) and Republican Indiana Rep. Erin Houchin (R) who serve as co-chairs for the Ohio River Basin Caucus.

The legislation would bring much-needed federal funding and resources to the Ohio River basin to support ecological, economic, and public health needs.

It would also create an Ohio River National Program Office within the Environmental Protection Agency to allow the states to work together with other organizations on restoration and preservation projects.

According to lawmakers, the Ohio River was named the second most endangered river in the country in 2023.
