LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville doctor said alcohol is the most-used substance among teenagers, a trend that can have negative long-term affects.

The World Health Organization reports that almost 60% of 15-year-olds have tried alcohol at least once, while nearly 40% said they have drank within the last month.

Dr. Brittany Badal with Norton Children's said teen and young adult brains are still developing, so alcohol at an early age can have long-term affects on memory function, impulse control, organizational skills and other critical brain functions.

Badal said parents should discuss risks with their children.

"Teens really appreciate being honest and upfront with them, acknowledging that alcohol is part of our culture," Badal said. "But if that is going to be offered to them, what strategies can they use to politely decline in different social settings? Or even thinking about our teens that are college-age and this is more in line with their college experience what that looks like to keep themselves safe."

Parents are encouraged to talk to their children's pediatrician for advice on how to approach those conversations.
