LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A key piece of Louisville's flood protection system is nearing the finish line.

Construction on the new Paddy's Run Pump Station is now 75% complete, marking a major milestone in a project designed to better protect neighborhoods from flooding.

The upgraded facility will more than double the pumping capacity of the current station, allowing it to move stormwater from overflowing inland creeks into the Ohio River more quickly during heavy rain.

According to the Louisville Metropolitan Sewer District, the existing pump station already helps protect more than 214,000 people.

Crews have completed the building that will house the new pumps, along with an access ramp for the facility. The new station is being built next to the existing pump station where Bells Lane meets the Ohio River.

Construction began in April 2023 and is expected to wrap up in 2027. Once complete, the project will strengthen Louisville's ability to manage high water during major storms and reduce the risk of flooding in surrounding communities.
