LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB/WAVE) — A Kentucky mother is fighting for harsher penalties for distracted drivers after her toddler was killed in a crash on Interstate 71.

Camberleigh Burns was just a few days away from her second birthday when she died in the crash near the Gene Snyder in 2022 after a van slammed into their vehicle.

Witnesses said it appeared the driver of the van never hit the brakes. The police report from the crash said "inattention" was a factor.

The driver never faced criminal charges.

Now, Burns' mother is pushing for stricter penalties for distracted drivers.

"Cammie's story is getting out there, and it really ... she really does have a magic about her that brings people in and can change their minds," Alyssa Burns said. "There's a lot of people who've told me, like, 'I think of your baby every time I get in the car now.'"

Burns is raising money to put up a billboard on I-71 to warn others about the risks of distracted driving.
