LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Migraines can be debilitating for adults and children alike.
According to Norton Healthcare, one in 10 children suffer from migraines.
The severe headaches are often a throbbing pain on one or both sides of the head. The migraines can cause nausea and sensitivity to light and sound.
Dr. Elizabeth Doll, a Norton Children's neurologist, said it's one of the most common diagnosis they see. Boys tend to get them earlier in life, but it's far more common in girls.
"Kids tend to have more belly pain that kind of goes along with the headache, but the belly pain can be more obvious than the head pain," Doll said. "So it can sometimes more into full blown migraines.
A major part of treatment includes lifestyle changes like eating healthy, drinking lots of water, avoiding caffeine and getting enough sleep.
