LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Vietnam War veterans received a special honor Monday ahead of Veterans Day.

The pinning ceremony in Louisville, hosted by Congressman Morgan McGarvey, marked 50 years since the end of the Vietnam War.

Soldiers returning from the war were infamously not honored for their service due to public opposition to the conflict.

Veterans told WDRB that events like these help them recognize the people who paid the ultimate price.

"Fifty-eight years since I came home and it took a good 40 years before I even said I was in Vietnam," veteran Michael Gullo said. "What for? To get scorned and looked down on? No. Now, all of a sudden: 'Welcome home, boys.' But we welcome each other home when we see each other. That's why we wear the hats—not for recognition, but to recognize each other as brothers. That's the purpose of the hat."
