LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A pair of Steller's sea eagles at the Louisville Zoo hatched a chick last week.

The Louisville Zoo said this is the third Steller's sea eagle hatchling in the Zoo's history.

An estimated 5,000 individuals remain in the wild, as the population is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

A live webcam was set up outside the eagle exhibit in Glacier Run, which can be viewed online.

"This eaglet is significant to the Species Survival Plan. These birds are seldom successfully bred in human care," said Louisville Zoo Director Dan Maloney in a news release. "The Louisville Zoo is one of only 17 North American zoos to feature sea eagles, and our pair are among just a few to successfully breed. We are so excited to watch the pair nest with their chick and encourage the community to celebrate with us in viewing the new family on the Zoo's webcam."
