LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell attended a Memorial Day service Monday at Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville.
The ceremony was hosted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. McConnell shared memories of his own father who served during World War II and said that he, like many others, reflects on loved ones that served during this time.
He said he has confidence that every generation will stand up to defend this nation.
"... which is why we are here today — to thank people who gave everything so that we can have the kind of lives that we have today," McConnell said. "God Bless America."Â
Rep. Morgan McGarvey, D-3, was also in attendance at the event. There was a performance of the national anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance, and the service also included a playing of taps.
The VFW is the oldest war veterans service organization in the country.
