Cooking grease

This undated image shows used cooking grease being disposed of properly. MSD reminds Louisville residents not to dump fats and grease down the drain because it can lead to serious pipe clogs.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — MSD is reminding anyone who's cooking this week to properly dispose of grease to avoid backups to their systems.

Experts said you should never pour fats, oils or grease down a sink, drain or toilet.

Instead, pour the grease into a heat-safe container, put it in the freezer and toss it into the garbage once it solidifies.

Also, put food waste in the trash and wipe out containers and dishes with a paper towel before washing them.

Remember, you can recycle deep-fryer oil by taking it to Louisville Metro grease drop-off locations. MSD then converts the oil into biodiesel.

Deep-fryer oil drop off locations:

  • Southwest Government Center: 7219 Dixie Highway
  • Central Government Center: 7201 Outer Loop
  • East District Public Works: 595 N. Hubbards Lane.
