LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- There are more than 5,300 extra Jefferson County Public Schools car riders this school year after thousands of students lost bus transportation.
Data from JCPS — taken from the 10th day of school in each year — shows there are more than 41,000 car riders this year, which is up nearly 15% from the same day last year. And there are more than 44,000 bus riders this year, which is down nearly 25%.
JCPS has opened applications for eligible parents to apply for stipends for parents whose kids lost bus transportation. All parents eligible for transportation stipends from JCPS can now start signing up, according to district officials.
The stipends are for families who lost transportation this year and chose to drive their kids to school. Families will be eligible for $5 a day, or $10 a day, if their student qualifies for free or reduced lunch. The stipends do count as taxable income.

District officials said in order to receive payments for August, September, and October, parents must opt-in for stipend payments by Sept. 23 and complete the registration process by Oct. 8.
