LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville doctor is encouraging people to take precautions during New Year's Eve parties this weekend.
Dr. Daniel Blatt, an infectious disease specialist with Norton Children's, said the bottom of people's shoes can often track in a slew of things like fecal matter, respiratory viruses and gastro-intestinal illnesses. Blatt said people should take off their shoes when they get to a house party to keep the germs from spreading.
That practice is especially important if young children will be crawling around.
"If you're walking around your house with shoes on that ere outside, all that stuff that was on the bottom of your shoes is going to be touched by any kid that is crawling on the ground," Blatt said. "They put things in their mouths, they touch the floor, and then stick their hands in their mouth and that's a really big reservoir for disease transmission."
Blatt suggested mopping floors before and after people come over and wiping down high-touch surfaces like door handles and countertops to prevent the spread of germs.
