BUCKNER, Ky. (WDRB) -- Signs caution, inform and direct us. But in Cindy Crush's Oldham County subdivision, they are vanishing.
Sometime after the sun goes down, thieves come out twisting and turning each of the green locators until they snap off.
"It just doesn't make any sense," Crush said. "They've either got to be tall, have a ladder, have a truck or something to stand on to get to it."
Her neighborhood, Darby Pointe, is missing several signs, but it's far from the only area hit.
"We've had reports from all over the county, really," Oldham County Judge Executive David Voegele said.
It's not like the thieves are using the signs as souvenirs to hang on their walls. Many of them have been ditched in a ravine not long after being taken.
The serial sign-stealers also recently decided to start picking off stop signs too, bringing the total of stolen signs close to 100.
"It's far past the point of being a prank or some activity that someone is doing for fun," Voegele said. "This is creating a dangerous situation in our county."
It's especially dangerous, Voegele said, when it comes to first responders trying to get somewhere fast to help someone in need.
"They're able to locate them quicker if there are directional signs in the neighborhood," he said.
Oldham County is taking this so seriously that it's ponying up big money to catch the people responsible.
"We've worked with the Crime Stoppers now and the police department," Voegele said. "We're offering a $1,000 reward."
