LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A 1,000 pound polar bear died while being transferred to the Louisville Zoo.
The North Carolina Zoo made the announcement Friday. The zoo said Payton the polar bear was being transferred to the Louisville Zoo as part of a polar bear breeding partnership.
A care team checked on him every few hours.
During a routine check, they found the 19-year-old polar bear unconscious. A necropsy confirmed cardiac disease and a tumor on his adrenal gland.
