LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police say they've arrested a man responsible for the theft of a number of weapons, explosives and police equipment stolen from LMPD vehicles.
According to court documents, 31-year-old Robert Dumonte was taken into custody Wednesday, just before 7 p.m., on Belmar Drive in Louisville's Camp Taylor neighborhood.
Police say he was spotted in possession of a 2010 Bentley and a 2020 Jeep Gladiator, both of which had been reported stolen out of Tennessee. The combined value of the vehicles was $140,000 according to police.
Police also say he also had a large amount of stolen equipment that belonged to LMPD, including body armor, tasers, a shotgun police describe as "less than lethal" (although the report says it is capable of firing lethal ammunition), a 40mm launcher, riot control explosives and police radios.
According to court documents, that equipment had been stolen from police vehicles over a period of two weeks. During that time period, police say LMPD vehicles themselves were also stolen.
Police say when officers tried to arrest Dumonte, he ran away wearing LMPD body armor, and armed with two .40 caliber handguns and two tasers stolen from LMPD.
He also wore a tactical vest with a police badge and the words "Police" on both sides, according to court documents.
He's charged with -- among other things -- receipt of stolen property, impersonating a peace officer and fleeing or evading police on foot.
On Thursday afternoon LMPD spokesman Dwight Mitchell issued a statement saying that as part of the investigation into Dumonte, officers executed several search warrants that led to the recovery of "a multitude of LMPD equipment, equipment, uniforms, weapons and munitions."
Mitchell said the investigation is ongoing.
Dumonte is also charged in connection with a number of additional vehicle thefts.
