CLARK COUNTY, Ind. (WDRB) — A new sheriff is coming to Clark County, Indiana.

Current Sheriff Scottie Maples didn't make it through Tuesday's Indiana primary election, losing the Republican nomination.

Two well-known names in Clark County are vying to be the next sheriff: Democrat Tim Deeringer and Republican Kenny Kavanaugh. They're both former Jeffersonville Police chiefs.

Kavanaugh has spent more than 30 years with the Jeffersonville Police Department, including 10 years as chief.

"I want to get more of that information out to the public on what we're doing," Kavanaugh said.

Deeringer retired from law enforcement after nearly 30 years with Jeffersonville police.

"My big promise is the safeguard of taxpayers," Deeringer said. "That's why the first thing I want to do is look at the budget."

Former Clark County Sheriff Jamey Noel is currently in prison. He's serving a 12-year sentence for stealing millions from taxpayers through years of fraud and misconduct. Noel's downfall leaves voters wanting a fresh start and more transparency.

"I'm going to have an open door policy," Deeringer said. "If they want to come talk to the sheriff, make an appointment come see me."

"The merit commission would be back fully operating every month with meetings," Kavanaugh said.

Both candidates push for accountability and collaboration within the department. Deeringer focuses on community policing and training for mental health issues.

"We're going to get in these neighborhoods," he said. "We're going to work hard to earn their trust."

Kavanaugh hopes to bring to a fresh perspective on leadership, professionalism and integrity.

"I want to introduce 21st century policing into the agency and take it further from where the previous administration have," he said.

Dwight Ingle also plans to run as an Independent.

Ingle said his top priorities include boosting morale within the Clark County Sheriff's Office and keeping the department professional. Ingle needs 720 signatures by June 30 to get his name on the ballot.

Indiana's general election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 3.
