LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A bill passed in the U.S. House on Wednesday targets non-citizen voting.
The "Safeguard American Voter Eligibility," or SAVE, Act would amend the National Voter Registration Act to require proof of citizenship to register to vote. It's already illegal for non-citizens to vote in federal elections.
Democrats call the new legislation a dangerous distraction meant to seed doubt before this year's presidential election.
Meanwhile, Republicans said this step is necessary to protect election integrity as the country faces unprecedented levels of illegal immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border.
"The very idea of our system of government is based on free and fair elections, and if there is one person that votes fraudulently, it disenfranchises all the other votes," Rep. Erin Houchin, R-9th District of Indiana, said.
The bill is not expected to pass the Senate, where Democrats hold the majority.
Kentucky lawmakers also passed Senate Bill 143 earlier this year, putting the issue on the November ballot as a constitutional amendment.
