LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Indiana lawmakers are reminding certain residents they may be eligible for property tax credits under new laws.
Due to recent changes to Indiana's property tax system converting some deductions into credits, eligible homeowners must reapply by Jan. 15 even if they've received similar benefits in the past.
Available credits include:
- Blind and disabled homeowners may be eligible for a $125 Blind/Disabled Credit, replacing the former deduction.
- Homeowners 65 years and older may qualify for a $150 Over 65 Credit, which replaces the Over 65 Deduction and eliminates prior assessed value limits that prohibited some seniors from qualifying.
- The Over 65 Circuit Breaker Credit removes year-to-year increases in property taxes for a homestead, expanding income limits to $60,000 for individuals and $70,000 for couples, and removes assessed value limits.
How to apply:
- Must be 65 years old or older by Dec. 31 of the year before the credit is claimed
- Applications must be filed with your county auditor by Jan. 15 of the year the property taxes are first due.
- Applicants must provide documentation to verify eligibility
Once approved, you do not need to reapply each year unless there are eligibility changes.
For more information, you can contact your local county auditor's office.
