LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- State Representative Bill Wesley has filed a measure to extend mental health services to rescue squad members.
The measure, House Bill 212, would allow individuals to participate in a wellness program. The program would educate them on work stress, anxiety, and PTSD.
Wesley successfully passed the Lifeliners Act in 2022, and this measure builds onto that.
"During the eastern Kentucky floods, we saw firsthand the hard, stressful, and lifesaving work rescue squad members complete," Wesley said in a press release on Tuesday. "We know these are physically challenging operations, but they’re also mentally and emotionally challenging. Providing robust mental health support is crucial to ensure the well-being of these individuals and our search and rescue efforts."
Wesley also noted in the press release that a first responder's job can not only affect them, but their families.
The goal of the bill, which has a number of co-sponsors, is to create a healthier individual, spouse, and parent.
