LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Kentucky U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell's spokesperson offered no update Tuesday to the senator's health 23 days after his mysterious hospitalization but let three statements from others on social media speak to his condition.
In a written statement just after 2 p.m. Tuesday, McConnell's spokesperson pointed to statements from political analyst Scott Jennings as well as reporting from NOTUS and the New York Times as examples of people who said they've spoken to McConnell recently.
"As the Senator continues to recover, we will be sure to keep you updated," his spokesperson wrote in an email Tuesday. "Wanted to flag the following tweets for you."
Below are the social media posts cited:
Scott Jennings — 12:52 p.m. July 7
"I spoke to my old friend Mitch McConnell this morning, the senior Senator from Kentucky. He’s still recovering in the hospital. We talked for just shy of 20 minutes … about IRAN, UKRAINE, the unfolding situation in MAINE, my visit to the TR Presidential Library, and even a little bit of Senate history. I told him we want to see him back at work as soon as possible."
Al Weaver — 1:23 p.m. July 7
New: McConnell talked to Thune and Barrasso — yesterday and today, respectively.
Per a Thune spox: “Leader Thune spoke with Sen. McConnell yesterday by phone. They had a lengthy and substantive conversation that covered a variety of topics, including national security.”
Catie Edmonson — 1:26 p.m. July 7
Senate Whip John Barrasso spoke by phone with McConnell this afternoon for "roughly 20 minutes," per a Barrasso spokeswoman, including on “the Graham Platner scandal, and the recent Supreme Court ruling on coordinated spending limits."
McConnell was admitted to the hospital on June 14, according to a statement from his office that only said he was "receiving excellent care." A statement a week later said that he would not be voting that week. And on Thursday, a new statement said that he "continues to improve" and "appreciates the outpouring of support he's receiving while he continues his recovery in the hospital.
That same statement was repeated Tuesday.
McConnell was reportedly found "unconscious" at his home in Washington the day of his hospitalization, according reporting from FOX News. The outlet reported audio from the 911 call on June 14 indicated the senator was "unconscious" when emergency crews were dispatched. The dispatcher also requested an Advanced Life Support (ALS) response.
McConnell's spokesperson did not comment on the audio last week, but confirmed the senator is still hospitalized and "working closely with his staff on legislative matters."
According to reporting from FOX News, McConnell's wife, Elaine Chao, saw no need for an 'immediate return' from China amid his hospitalization.
"The secretary was on a long-planned trip in China to support her family's philanthropic endeavors," the spokesperson said to FOX News. "During the trip, she met with a number of people, including the U.S. ambassador. The Senator's health did not warrant an immediate return to the U.S."
Chao has since returned to the U.S.
The senator's unspecified health issues come after several hospitalizations in recent years, and as Senate Republicans are already navigating a narrow majority in the final months before the midterm elections. McConnell, 84, was the longest serving Senate leader in history before stepping aside from that role. He is serving out his final term, which ends in January.
