LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville civil rights leaders are voicing their opinions on Mayor Greenberg's appointment for Jefferson County Clerk.

Greenberg recently announced State Senator David Yates to take over the position, after Bobbie Holsclaw passed away in September.

In a public letter, Louisville Urban League and the NAACP questioned whether the Mayor is trying to "tip the scales" by appointing Yates.

Greenberg appointed him over Roz Welch, who is also campaigning for the job and who has served as an election officer but doesn't work for the clerk's office.

Welch responded to the news and targeted Yates' lack of experience.

"Yates is not ready," Welch said in a news release. "Our clerk's office deserves leadership that knows the systems that house our documents and powers our election. Our city deserves leaders who are more than career politicians."

Yates said he will sit back and listen, also while looking at other practices that clerk's offices have used that have worked in the past.

The 2024 election did not go smoothly in Jefferson County, as technical problems led to long lines throughout the county.

Yates and Welch are set to face against each other in the Democratic primary in May.
