LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Not every county, city and town in Kentucky will have medical cannabis on Jan. 1.
The law was written to allow local governments to opt out either through an ordinance or ballot resolutions.
“Yeah I mean I don’t see a problem with it, people do need it for medicinal purposes, I mean if the state chooses to legalize it then I don’t have a problem with it being here,” Bruce Richee, who lives in Windy Hills.
The City of Windy Hills has opted out of having medical cannabis in the area.
“I mean that is their choice, I suppose, I mean I don’t see anything wrong with it," Richee said. "I guess it just depends on the residents of the county."
Including Windy Hills, five municipalities in Jefferson County have opted out, Hurstbourne, Hollow Creek, Forest Hills and Bellemeade.
Alan Fredrickson moved to Louisville from Colorado, but was there when the state first legalized medical cannabis.
“Uh, I’m for it in the medical sense," Fredrickson said. "Once it is recreational, ya know, there is a lot of money in it they might be into, but I think that kinda brings some riff raff."
Almost half of the state is putting medical cannabis on the ballot. It's similar to voting for your county or town to sell liquor.
Fredrickson said he saw an influx people move to Colorado when the state legalized recreational marijuana. He said don't be surprised if your new neighbors are part of the marijuana migration.
“I think some of the other states around us don’t really have it or anything so I think if you would have to migrate a little to get you medicine, I think that would be all right," Fredrickson said.
If your town or county doesn't allow medical cannabis sales, it doesn't mean you can't travel to an area that does as long as you meet the requirements.
