Marshall County High School reopens after mass shooting that killed 2 students

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The stepfather of accused Marshall County High School shooter Gabriel Parker could face charges.

Commonwealth Attorney Mark Blankenship told the Washington Post that he's considering filing charges against 26-year-old Justin Minyard.

Parker, who is now 16, is accused of opening fire in the high school back in January killing two students and injuring 18 others.

Court records show Minyard kept a Ruger 9mm semiautomatic handgun in an unlocked closet, and when answering police questions on the day of the shooting, he walked back to the closet and found it wasn't there.

Police say Parker admitted Parker had easy access to the gun. Records show he told police that he carried a laundry basket to his parents' bedroom closet and grabbed the pistol case off a shelf. He then put it in the basket under the clothes.

Parker also took at least two magazines, along with the bullets.

Blakenship says to charge Minyard, they would have to prove he saw signs his stepson was troubled and failed to store the gun properly.

The in-depth story in the Washington Post discovered that police were able to find out where the gun came from in 105 school shootings.  Of those shootings, 84 guns were taken from a child's home or from homes of relatives or friends. The Post discovered just four instances when the adult owners of the weapons were criminally punished because they failed to lock them up.
