LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A search is underway for a man missing after his boat capsized while he attempted to help people stranded in flood waters in southern Indiana.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources received a call around 7:20 a.m. Friday about a boat capsized in flood waters east of Cortland near County Road 400 E. and State Road 258 in Jackson County, Indiana, according to DNR officer Jim Hash.Â
Hash said two men were in the boat trying to help people who were stranded in a submerged vehicle in flood water when it lost power. The men were able to start the boat, but it died again and capsized. One of the men was able to make it to shore, but a search and rescue operation is underway for the other man. Hash said neither man was wearing a life jacket.
Jackson County was hit hard with strong storms this week, and Hash said swift currents and debris are hindering search operations.
Hash said DNR has two airboats and drones searching the area. The search will continue as conditions permit throughout daylight hours Friday. The situation will be re-accessed if needed for Friday night and Saturday morning.Â
