LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- On this Memorial Day, Louisvillians gathered at one of the city's most historic sites to honor America's fallen heroes.

Hundreds of American flags stood guard over the graves of those who served in our military as the annual ceremony took place in Cave Hill's national cemetery, the final resting place for thousands of veterans dating back to the Civil War.

Local veterans, families and state leaders paused for a moment of reflection, remembering the lives lost in service to the country.

"All across America today, people are gathered across the cemeteries to remember those who gave their lives and who since passed away in service to our country," Kentucky U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnel, R-KY, said Monday. "For those of you have served, thank you so much. America is deeply in your debt."

The cemetery remains open throughout the holiday weekend for anyone wishing to pay their respects.
