LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Three people suffered minor injuries in an apartment fire that sent black smoke into traffic on Interstate 65 near downtown Louisville Monday afternoon.
Louisville Fire Captain Donovan Sims said the fire was reported just after 2:30 p.m. by a driver on I-65. Soon after, firefighters responded to a 12 unit apartment on South Brook Street. The ramp from I-65 to Brook Street was briefly shut down because of the smoke.
When firefighters arrived, they found flames and thick smoke coming from the roof. Crews called for extra equipment to help fight the two-alarm fire. There was a partial collapse of the second floor.
It took more than 50 firefighters about 90 minutes to get the fire under control.
No rescues were reported, but Sims said two residents and one firefighter were checked out by EMS for minor injuries.
The American Red Cross is helping with the residents displaced by the fire.
Louisville Metro Arson has determined the fire was started by "smoking material" in an ashtray on the 2nd floor.
