FORT KNOX, Ky. (WDRB) — Sen. Mitch McConnell visited Fort Knox Thursday to speak on issues in Washington and the commonwealth.

Officials at Fort Knox honored him with a "Sound of Freedom" award. The president and CEO of Knox Regional Development Alliance, Lance O'Bryan, said over the course of McConnel's time in Washington he invested more than $570 million in Fort Knox.

"It's a small token of our appreciation for everything the senator has done," said O'Bryan.

The senator also addressing President Donald Trump's speech from Wednesday night and his decisions regarding the war in Iran.

"I think this is the right thing to do," he said. "I support the effort and I think we should just be grateful that their military and terrorist capacity has been dramatically reduced."

Recently, Kentucky lawmakers approved a statue of McConnell being displayed at the state capitol.

"I’m honored and humbled by this decision and I’m grateful to the general assembly for the recognition," said McConnell.

The senator's visit comes a little more than a month away from the primary election for his Senate seat. Thursday, he touched on recent political ads and division between parties.

"Some things really ought to be above partisanship and I think tone is still important, I think all the nastiness is pretty excessive," McConnell said.

The primary election for the Senate race will be held May 19.
