WiFi and charging stations on new TARC buses

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- TARC wants to get residents' opinions on a new payment system for its bus transportation services, and it's holding eight public meetings to get them.

According to a news release, the Transit Authority of River City plans to implement a system that will allow passengers to pay for their rides with the tap of a smartcard, as they board. The release indicates that fares will not increase, and cash -- exact fare -- will remain a payment option.

Additionally, paper tickets, passes and transfer slips would be discontinued, replaced by the new smartcard payments. Free transfer trips would remain available with smartcards, but will be discontinued with cash fares because drivers would no longer distribute paper transfer slips.

Passes purchased on smartcards would provide unlimited rides for a specific time period beginning with the first use of the pass to pay a fare, unlike paper passes now used, which provide rides only on a specific day or during a specific month. TARC plans to begin offering seven-day passes in addition to the 24-hour and 30-day passes with the new system.

TARC3 paratransit vehicles would not be a part of the initial system but are expected to be phased in at a later time.

The new system is expected to begin next summer. More information about the system can be obtained at www.ridetarc.org.

Starting tomorrow, Tues., Nov. 12, TARC will hold the first of eight public meetings to get public comments and questions about the proposed system.
