LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A 35-year-old Taylorsville man is facing several charges after he allegedly fired a gun toward a driver on a Louisville interstate Monday afternoon during a "road rage incident."

It happened about 5:30 p.m. July 14 in the southbound lanes of Interstate 65 South near Interstate 264 East, according to the arrest report. That's where officers responded to a trouble run and spoke with two witnesses who said "they had been in a road rage incident in the area of I264 Eastbound and I65 South."

One witness said he was trying to merge onto I-264 East when another driver, identified as Derek Sanders of Taylorsville, "cut him off and they both exchanged words and obscene gestures," according to court records.

Another witness told investigators Sanders pointed a gun at him before lowering it and firing a single shot towards the rear tire of the passenger side of his vehicle, "striking it, causing damage."

Sanders admitted to officers at the scene he exchanged words with the drivers but denied firing a weapon.

After officers found a black pistol in the center console of Sanders' vehicle, they asked him how many rounds he usually keeps in it. He told officers he keeps one round in the chamber, and 16 rounds in the magazine. Officers checked the magazine and counted 15 rounds, with one round in the chamber.

Sanders gave officers permission to continue searching the vehicle, and they found a "zip lock bag containing several white and orange in color pills of suspected Adderall."

Sanders said the pills are for his child with ADHD. He was subsequently taken into custody and booked into Louisville Metro Corrections.

Sanders appeared in arraignment court July 15 on two counts of wanton endangerment, one count of criminal mischief and one count of trafficking in a controlled substance. He was released until his next court date after posting a $5,000 cash bond.
