Trinity High School student dies after being sucked into drain pipe

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Trinity High School student who was sucked into a drain pipe during a heavy rain storm last week has died, Principal Dan Zoeller confirmed to WDRB News.

Davey Albright, 15, was playing near a drainage ditch behind his home on Foxfire Drive near North Hurstbourne Parkway on Aug 31. Neighbors called for help after Davey was swept into the drain, and he was later found in the backyard of a home up the street.

The news was announced to students at Trinity on Friday.

"Literally, when I went home, I just sat in my room. It just makes me sad," said Trinity sophomore Bryce Gentner. "I mean, it shocked me. It shocked all my classmates. Everyone was just in silence. I never see him be mean to anybody, never bullied anyone. If someone got bullied, he would stick up for him. That's the kind of guy he was."

Neighbors said they could hear Davey's cries for help coming from the storm drain. He was unconscious and not breathing when he was taken to Norton Children's Hospital. He died Friday afternoon.

After the the accident, a friend of Davey's launched a GoFundMe page to raise money for his medical bills. In four days, it raised nearly $34,000. That same GoFundMe page is now being used to collect funds to help pay for funeral expenses in addition to medical bills.

"Our thoughts and condolences are with Davey Albright's family, friends and the community. This was a tragic accident," MSD said in a statement released Friday evening. "On Friday, August 31st, the Louisville area received a significant amount of rain that fell at a rapid rate. Until we know more, MSD is not in a position to provide specific information about what happened."
