Two more suspects arrested in PRP home invasion murder

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- One of the detectives who shot at a suspect in a McDonald's parking lot last night has been shot before. Det. Kevin Speaks was shot and wounded in 2010 while working undercover.

Both Speaks and the other officer involved in the shooting, Det. Bradley Beckham, have been with LMPD since 2008, most recently with the VIPER unit.

Speaks and Beckham are on paid administrative leave, as is routine following police shootings.

Meanwhile, two more people have been arrested in connection with the case the officers were investigating, the PRP home invasion turned murder.

This case is involving an ever-widening web of suspects. A total of three people are now under arrest, and police may not be finished.

The latest suspect, 21-year-old Jevon Curry, has been charged with murder, robbery, and burglary in Monday's home invasion murder of Paul Barber.

On Thursday, police say Curry opened fire on officers Speaks and Beckham when they approached his car in the McDonald's parking lot at Terry and Greenwood.

The two returned fire, wounding Curry and a female passenger.

Police will not say whether the officers had guns drawn when they approached Curry.

"They were fired upon, and they took action. We were just fortunate that no one else was injured as it relates to this incident," said LMPD spokesman Sgt. Robert Biven.

And on Thursday afternoon, police arrested another suspect, 20-year-old Charles Washington. He has also been charged with murder, robbery and burglary.

He was picked up at the intersection of Johnsontown Road and Greenbelt Highway.

Police say Washington was arrested following a routine traffic stop. He was pulled over for not wearing a seat belt.

"The officer pulled that individual over, and was diligent in recognizing this individual as a person that was wanted in connection for that home invasion. Once our detectives got involved, it led to charges," said Biven.

Police say they recovered handguns from both suspects, but cannot say yet whether those guns were involved in Monday's murder.

A third suspect, Shakahakeen Boyd is already in custody.

Earlier this week, the victim's mother said she could not imagine who would attack her son.

"You know, everybody has their enemies, of course. But none, none like this," said Elizabeth Barber on Tuesday.

But police say this was not a random act, and that drugs were likely involved.

"As to what motivated these individuals to get together and do that, only they would know that. And as the investigation continues, hopefully, that picture will become more clear," said Biven.
