LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB)--A U of L football player remains in the hospital, as police continue to search for the person who put him there. Lorenzo Mauldin was riding his moped when he was hit by a car.
Mauldin is recovering at Jewish Hospital. And campus police are focused on finding the hit and run driver
It happened Tuesday morning near the intersection of Floyd and Hahn Streets. That's one of the U of L's busiest thoroughfares.
"Mr. Mauldin was northbound on Floyd Street and when he got near Hahn Street, contact was made with another vehicle," says Assistant Chief Kenny Brown, with Campus Police.
Campus police say at least three witnesses heard the impact, and gave information to detectives.
Brown says, "The witnesses describe as possibly a tan vehicle, a bronze vehicle or a champagne colored vehicle ah, possibly a small sedan."
Mauldin was rushed to the hospital...and Tuesday afternoon, police received an update on his condition from the athletic department.
"It says all preliminary tests on Lorenzo Mauldin have come back good, he will be kept overnight in the hospital for continued observation and evaluation for precautionary reasons," says Brown.
This is just the latest battle for Mauldin, who has already overcome turmoil in his personal life.
He spoke to WDRB last year about growing up in a home with an absent father and mother battling alcohol abuse.
Lorenzo Mauldin says, "I would tell her, mom, you got to stop drinking; that's the reason why you keep getting incarcerated because of your drinking habits."
His troubled home life eventually led to time in 16 foster homes before coming to U of L.
"Some people get scared and they take off," says Brown. Campus police hope surveillance cameras outside the YUM! Center practice facility will help identify the driver...or that the driver will find them first.
"What we'd like is if we can make contact with these people. If they would call us at 852-6111," says Brown.
Mauldin is expected to be released from the hospital sometime on Wednesday. It's not clear whether he'll be able to play in the season opener on Sunday afternoon.
