NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WDRB) — If neighborhood roads in Kentuckiana could be summed up in one word during this recent storm, it might be "crappy." That blunt assessment reflects the frustrations of many residents dealing with hazardous travel conditions.

“Awful,” Kimberly Wiseman said. “I fell twice this morning coming home because it was just completely iced over.”

While some people could stay home to avoid the treacherous roads, others didn’t have that luxury. Among them were essential healthcare workers from Corydon, Indiana. The dedicated professionals found themselves relying on an unexpected lifeline.

“I got stuck,” one woman shared.

Fortunately, help arrived, thanks to a group of volunteers stepping up to transport hospital staff to Baptist Health Floyd in New Albany.

Coordinating this lifesaving effort was Jonah Barrow, who not only organized but also drove some of the workers himself. His wife, Destiny, managed a flurry of incoming calls from those in need of a ride.

“I would be on one phone call and have five different people call in within a matter of five minutes,” Destiny explained.

Fifteen volunteers navigated the icy terrain to ensure doctors, nurses, and other essential staff made it to work. Their dedication extended beyond a single day as they continued their efforts days after the storm.

“It’s amazing. It’s very thoughtful,” Wiseman said. “I drop every, I drop a lot of things to come help out as much as I can, so it’s nice that other people will do the same for me.”

These volunteer drivers worked tirelessly, transporting nearly 170 hospital employees across various shifts, allowing the healthcare system to continue to function smoothly during the storm.

“It makes me feel good. It really does," Jonah said. "Being as young as I am, being able to throw something like this together and making such a huge impact on the hospital staff… it definitely makes me feel good.”

Because of their efforts, the people who care for the community received a little care in return.
