LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Washington County Schools says a student suffered a medical emergency Monday morning after ingesting an "illegal substance."

In a post on the district's Facebook page, Superintendent J. Robin Cochran said the student accepted the substance from another student.

EMS responded and transported the student to be evaluated. Cochran said the students involved "are currently stable."

"We understand that situations like this can create concern and questions within our families and community," the superintendent's statement continued. "While we cannot share specific details due to student privacy laws, we want to assure families that student safety remains our highest priority."

Cochran said the incident was reported to law enforcement, and the district "is fully cooperating with their investigation and any potential prosecution."

The superintendent said the incident serves as "a sobering reminder of how critical it is that we work together" to educate students "about the dangers of illegal substances and the importance of never accepting anything from others without parental knowledge."

"It is also a strong reminder of the importance of ongoing conversations at home and at school about the dangers of ingesting any substance not provided or approved by a parent or guardian," Cochran said. "We ask for your partnership in reinforcing this message with your children."

Cochran said school disciplinary procedures are being followed after the incident.
